– What happened? –

The first round of the 2018 UCI Para-cycling Road World Cup took place in Ostend, Belgium, on May 3-6. This is the ninth year of the discipline’s Road World Cup, with three events taking place between now and mid-August.

Competition opened on Thursday with two days of individual time trials across the cycle, handbike and tricycle divisions, followed by two days of road races and the team relay. The United States won the most medals, with a total of 20 (5 gold, 9 silver, 6 bronze), followed by Italy at 18 (4 gold, 6 silver, 8 bronze). However, the Netherlands won the most gold medals, with seven, followed by Australia with six.

For individual results, ten athletes won both the time trial and road race in their respective categories. Athletes achieving the double represented Great Britain (2), Sweden, Canada, Japan, Netherlands (2), Germany, Australia and the United States. In the team relay, the Italian squad of Paolo Cecchetto (H3), Luca Mazzone (H2) and Alessandro Zanardi (H5) beat the United States.

– Focus on Jetze Plat –

Jetze Plat of the Netherlands swept the Men's H4 category at the first round of the 2018 UCI Para-cycling Road World Cup in Ostend, Belgium, winning both the time trial and the road race. Previously classified H5, Platz began using a handcycle as a child to cycle to school. At the Rio 2016 Paralympics in Brazil, Platz won a bronze medal in the men's H5 road race, and a gold medal in the PT1 category of the triathlon.
