The OVO Energy Tour of Britain can trace its lineage back over 70 years to the first 'Tour of Britain.' Since then, it has been held under different names such as the Milk Race, Kellogg's Tour of Britain and the PruTour. In 2014, it became a 2.HC ranked UCI event and is part of the UCI Europe Tour.

Consisting of eight stages, the race began in the southwest of Great Britain, worked its way to the north near the Scottish border, then finishing in London after 1135 kilometres. The race saw five lead changes before France's Julian Alaphilippe (Quick-Step Floors) took the lead on the sixth stage and held it to the end. Andre Greipel (Lotto Soudal) won the first sprint stage to don the leader's jersey, losing it a day later to Alessandro Tonelli (Bardiani-CSF). Patrick Bevin (BMC) moved into the lead on Stage 3 and held it through the next stage before losing it to Primoz Roglic (LottoNL-Jumbo), who lost it on the next stage to eventual winner Alaphilippe.

Belgian rider Timothy Dupont (Wanty - Groupe Gobert) moved up three spots in the Europe Tour rankings in September to take the lead of the Continental Tour. Dupont was particularly busy in September, finishing eight races, with a third place in two UCI 1.1 races and sixth in the UCI 1.HC Primus Classic. In August, he won the Schaal Sels (UCI 1.1) in Belgium. He had three top-10 stage finishes at the Tour de France in July. Earlier in the season, he won the points jersey at the 4 Jours de Dunkerque (UCI 2.HC).
