Trofeo Alfredo Binda
Trofeo Alfredo Binda

– What happened? –

For the first time since Regina Schleicher's victory in 2006, the Trofeo Alfredo Binda-Comune di Cittiglio was won in a group sprint of more than ten riders. Coryn Rivera (Team Sunweb) took the lombardian classic out of a 25-rider group on Sunday. The 24-year-old Californian beat Arlenis Sierra (Astana Women’s Team) from Cuba and the Dane Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig (Cervelo-Bigla Pro Cycling Team) to the line.

UCI Women's WorldTour leader Elisa Longo Borghini (Wiggle High5) tried to attack with Katarzyna Niewiadoma (WM3 Pro Cycling Team) on the climbs, but the group was too strong. "This was a good sign for women's cycling, because team efforts more and more beat individuals now," said Longo Borghini after finishing 9th and retaining her UCIWWT lead. The depth of the peloton is growing and UCIWWT has seen three different winners from three teams in its first three races.

Prior to the UCIWWT event, 147 young women from eleven National Federation teams and 16 club teams raced the first round of the UCI Women Junior Nations' Cup. Victory went to 18-year-old Dutch rider Lorena Wiebes.

Coryn Rivera

Introduced to tandem riding by her dad at nine years old, Coryn Rivera started road racing two years later. At university, she raced road, track, cyclo-cross and mountain bike, and aged 18 raced in Europe as part of the USA national team. During her three years (2014 -2016) with UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling Team, she won two stages at the Thüringen Rundfahrt, in 2015 and 2016. This season, Rivera is riding for Team Sunweb. The “pocket rocket” as she is known, is a powerful sprinter, who can handle smaller climbs well enough to be a contender for most classics.
