The UCI’s annual mobility conference, the UCI Mobility & Bike City Forum, will take place on Tuesday 12 November, at the iconic Paris City Hall. After Milan (Italy) in 2018, this year sees the French capital welcome international experts from the cycling and mobility community for a day of presentations, exchange and networking. The UCI organises this annual Forum as part of its commitment to promote cycling in all forms and invites all interested parties to register.
A city with a bold plan for cycling, and a recent recipient of the UCI Bike City label, Paris represents a fitting venue for the 2019 Forum. Attendees will hear from Paris representatives how the city is realising its vision to become a world-leading cycling capital. Not only combining bold leadership with funding to develop new projects and infrastructure, Paris is also a living lab for new approaches towards urbanism and transport.
The keynote address will be delivered by Vice-President of the World Cycling Alliance, Amanda Ngabirano, who will explain how active travel can support inclusiveness and equity; supporting civic pride and smart and fair planning. Emphasising that cycling is much more than a green mode of transport, she will share insights on how the bicycle can strengthen the social fabric of urban places - providing freedom of mobility.
Sessions support Cycling for All
In a year when the UCI has released two new toolkits to support everyday cycling promotion and teamed up with the Cycling Embassy of Denmark (CED) to release a new digital platform, Cycling - Danish Solutions, the Forum will also provide insights on support the world governing body for cycling can provide, thanks to partnerships developed with organisations such as the CED and the Bikeability Trust.
We also understand the clear link between the hosting of cycling events and local mobility and tourism. As such, a panel will bring together practitioners from the Italian Dolomites, British Cycling and the City of Brussels who are working to maximise the knock-on effect of boosting bicycle use through the staging of international cycling events.
Another panel will focus on practical tools to promote active, safe and sustainable cities. Speakers from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development’s (OECD’s) International Transport Forum, PeopleForBikes, the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and Sport & Citizenship, will highlight tools that can support a wide array of actors who want to see more cycling around the world.
In 2019, talk of what’s next for transport seems inescapable. The rise of electromobility, increasing public consciousness over environmental issues, new shared mobility services, and mobility as a service, mean that transport models are being rethought from the core up. The Mobility Mix of the Future will bring clarity on these trends - and importantly answer the question of what this means for cycling. Combining voices from Ride-On Scotland, POLIS (Cities and Regions for Transport Innovation), the World Resources Institute and the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), this session promises to give an insight on how we can best maximise the potential for more cycling.
Continuing the forward-thinking theme, the Forum will close with an address from the International Transport Forum’s Philippe Crist, who will reflect on the future of active and sustainable travel, as well as trying to cast some light on what’s next for cycling promotion amidst new innovations in transport.
