Off-road specialists made their mark in the world of road cycling at the weekend.
While nobody can take the glory away from Strade Bianche winners Julian Alaphilippe (Deceuninck-QuickStep) and Annemiek van Vleuten (Mitchelton Scott), stars of mountain bike and cyclo-cross were up there with the best.
Second place in the women’s race went to six-time mountain bike UCI World Champion (5 x XCM and 1 x XCO) Annika Langvad. The Danish athlete had never really competed at international level on the road until the 2018 UCI Road World Championships in Innsbruck (Austria). On Saturday she made her UCI Women’s WorldTour début with Boels Dolmans and surprised herself as much as anyone with her second place.
"I am very happy, even a little bit in shock,” she said afterwards.
Meanwhile three-time cyclo-cross UCI World Champion Wout van Aert confirmed by finishing third in the Strade Bianche for the second consecutive year: "Last year was more out of the blue, but this time the other guys in the finale watched me and so it's always more difficult. I’ve confirmed that I’m able to do some great things in the biggest Classics," he said.
