A former professional cyclist and member of the USSR national cycling team, Igor Makarov has, since his retirement from competition, been a key supporter and sponsor of Russian cycling. Mr Makarov became deputy chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Russian Cycling Federation in 2008 and was elected President of the Russian Cycling Federation in 2010. Since 2016 he has been Honorary President. He was elected onto the UCI Management Committee in September 2011. Mr Makarov has prioritised the hosting of major international events with Moscow hosting the 2011 UCI Junior Track World Championships and the 2012 European Mountain Bike Championships.
