UCI Mountain Bike Eliminator World Cup powered by citymountainbike.com

23 March | Barcelona (ESP)

⚊ WHAT HAPPENED ? ⚊

Turning to mountain bike, Jeroen van Eck (NED) started the international MTB Eliminator season as he finished it last year: on top of the podium. The overall winner of the 2018 UCI Mountain Bike Eliminator World Cup powered by citymountainbike took victory at the first round of the 2019 series, in Barcelona, Spain. This was not the case for last year’s top women performers in the World Cup:  Norway’s Ingrid Bøe Jacobsen and second-placed Ella Holmegard of Sweden. In Barcelona, the two Scandinavians had to bow down to the superiority of Germany’s Marion Fromberger, bronze medallist at the UCI Urban Cycling World Championships.

⚊ WHAT HAPPENED ? ⚊

A win in Tirreno-Adriatico’s final stage – a 10km time trial – boosted the confidence of Belgium’s Victor Campenaerts (Lotto Soudal) ahead of his UCI Hour Record attempt. His time of 11:23 put him 3 seconds in front of runner-up Alberto Bettiol (EF Education First) and ahead of TT specialists Tom Dumoulin (7th) and UCI World Champion Rohan Dennis (8th). Campenaerts will attempt to beat Bradley Wiggins’ UCI Hour Record of 54.526km in Aguascalientes, Mexico, on April 16 or 17.

⚊ WHAT HAPPENED ? ⚊

While Julian Alaphilippe (Deceuninck - Quick-Step), 26, was still savouring his first Monument victory - Milano-Sanremo - Marianne Vos (CCC-Liv) rode to her fourth win (after 2009, 2010 and 2012) in another Italian race: the Trofeo Binda - Comune di Cittiglio. Ten years after first winning the race through Lombardy, at the tender age of 21, the Dutch rider proved she’s still one of the world’s best, executing a perfect uphill sprint to beat Amanda Spratt (Mitchelton Scott) and Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig (Bigla).
