Biography

Belkin-Pro Cycling Team is a new name in 2013. The green, white and black jersey is brand new too. But the structure has a 17-year history within the peloton, and the American sponsor will continue its philosophy of blending young guns – part of its scouting and development work – with some of cycling’s top level experienced riders.

One of the top signings, one-day specialist Sep Vanmarcke, has already made his mark on the sport at 24. Riding with the Garmin squad, Vanmarcke was responsible for Tom Boonen’s one major defeat in the northern Classics last year, beating him in a three-man breakaway in the Omloop Het Nieuwsblad. Together with Belkin’s other cobbled Classics specialist, Lars Boom, the young Belgian could form a formidable one-day tandem this spring.

Bauke Mollema turned in an encouragingly solid performance in the Ardennes Classics last year, with top ten results in all three - and he will be aiming to improve on that this April. A month later Belkin’s top Grand Tour specialist, Robert Gesink, will make his debut in the Giro d’Italia. It will be equally interesting to see how well Gesink is supported in Italy by one of Belkin-Pro Cycling Team’s most promising young riders, Wilco Kelderman. Another product of the Rabobank Under 23 team, Kelderman finished seventh in the 2012 Tour of California, coincidentally where Gesink himself first showed his talent for stage racing, and eighth in the Critérium du Dauphiné.
