It’s just huge to get this first world champion’s jersey.” Following flawless displays in the qualification round and the semi-finals, Australia’s Logan Martin maintained his impeccably high standards in the men’s final. The last man down the ramp on the first run, Logan produced a very technical display to score 93.80 points and take the lead from British rider Alex Coleborn, who totalled 92.80. While most of his rivals struggled second time out, the Australian, who won the inaugural UCI BMX Freestyle Park World Cup in 2016, produced another very clean run to seal the title with a total of 93.82 points. Coleborn (91.05 points) took second behind him, with the USA’s Colton Walker (89.78) third. Following his second place in this season’s World Cup, Sunday’s win completed a near-perfect season for Logan. Having now made its world championship debut, BMX Freestyle Park can look forward to yet more excitement at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020.

“I was a bit nervous and stressed about these first championships. I’m happy it went well. This world championship title means a lot to me.” Sixteen-year-old Hannah Roberts lived up to her status as pre-event favourite in the women’s competition. The 2017 UCI BMX Freestyle Park World Cup winner secured the first rainbow jersey in the latest discipline to be recognised by cycling’s governing body, averaging 90.10 points over her two runs. Roberts pulled a flair in the quarter on her first run to score 94 points and take control of the competition. Opting to play it safe on her second outing, the American produced a flow run to score 86.20 points and win the title from Germany’s Lara Marie Lessmann (88.35) and the USA’s Angie Marino (86.38). Japanese rider Minato Oike belied her lack of international experience by finishing fourth, an encouraging performance for the 21-year-old, who will no doubt have her sights set on the Olympics on home soil in 2020.
