The 2017 UCI Trials World Youth Games, held last weekend in Viborg, Denmark, saw record participation numbers.

More than 175 of the discipline's young specialists, aged from 9 to 16 and representing a total of 16 countries, performed on the artificial sections constructed in the city centre. The event proved beyond doubt that the next Trials generation is bursting with talent, some of whom will almost certainly reach the highest level.

The event began with the National Teams' competition, won by Czech Republic (bronze medallists a year ago), ahead of Spain (UCI World Youth Games winner in 2015) and France (UCI World Youth Games winner in 2016). The finals of the individual competitions took place on the Sunday.

Among the nine medal-winning countries - taking into account the National Teams' competition - Spain produced the best overall performance by winning nine medals (three gold, four silver and two bronze), followed by Czech Republic (two gold medals, one silver and one bronze). The other nations winning at least one UCI World Youth Games title were - alongside Czech Republic - France and Great Britain.

Five years after first participating in the UCI Trials World Youth Games, and one year after their incredible haul in Freiamt (five medals), Japan showed that they have become a major force in this discipline's youth categories, with one of their riders making the podium as the country ended the teams’ competition level on points with Germany, in 5th place.

Among the athletes worthy of mention are Luka Pasturel (FRA), who finished 2nd in the Poussins category last year and went one better in the higher Benjamins category this year; Jakub Mudrak (SVK), the leading Poussin in Freiamt and the 2nd-placed Benjamin in Viborg; Oliver Widmann (GER), 2nd in the Cadets category for the second consecutive year; Sheyla Wipf (SUI), again on the podium in the Youth Girls category after winning in each of the previous two years; and Alzbeta Pecinkova (CZE), 2nd in the Girls category this year after winning the title a year ago.There were also noteworthy performances from Charlie Rolls (GBR) and Vera Barón (ESP), the respective winners of the Cadets and Girls categories.

For the Elite riders, the Trials season continues with the next round of the UCI World Cup in Albertville, France, on 26th-27th August.
