The individual time trial events concluded on Friday at the 2018 UCI Para-cycling Road World Championships, with 17 world titles awarded in Maniago, Italy. The United States won the most gold medals with four, followed by Great Britain with three and Canada with two. Eight other nations also won world titles.
Eight riders successfully defended their world titles, however, two stood out: Shelley Gautier of Canada in Women's T1, and Michael Teuber of Germany, in Men's C1. Both have amassed a remarkable collection of gold medals over their careers.
Gautier won her 13th world title in time trial and road race, her seventh in the time trial, and has never been beaten in her category since it was established in 2010. The 50 year old rider faced her strongest field yet, with five riders from four nations competing, and beat Russia's Yulia Sibagatova by nearly two minutes. Olga Tsybulskaia finished third.
Also 50 years of age, Michael Teuber won his tenth time trial world title in the combined IPC/UCI Road World Championships going back to 1998 (the Championships became a UCI event in 2009) - ten out of a possible 12 titles. Combined with road race gold medals, this marked his 20th gold medal at the World Championships. Teuber beat Canada's Ross Wilson by a slim two seconds for the title, with Ricardo Ten Argiles of Spain taking the bronze medal.
The UCI Para-cycling Road World Championships continue on Saturday with the first road race competitions.
