Two weeks ago in Malaysia, Switzerland’s Dominik Planzer and Roman Schneider took the silver medal in the UCI Indoor Cycling World Championships after losing in the final to Austrians Patrick Schnetzer and Markus Bröll.
In Mosnang, Switzerland, on Saturday they got their revenge, beating the UCI World Champions and claiming the UCI Cycle-ball World Cup Final.
Planzer and Schneider (RS Altdorf) dominated the first half of the final of the UCI World Cup tournament in Mosnang and were leading 5:2 at the break. However in the second half the Austrians RC Höchst I, honouring their rainbow jerseys, upped their game and with just two minutes to full time had drawn level at 5:5. Withstanding the pressure, Roman Schneider and Dominik Planzer demonstrated some amazing team work to score a deciding goal: a well-timed pass from Schneider to Planzer allowed the latter to mark and take victory by 6:5. It was the Swiss team’s fourth overall UCI World Cup victory and a fitting way to celebrate Planzer’s 50th UCI World Cup tournament.
Two German teams RV Gärtringen (Uwe Berner – Matthias König) and RMC Stein (Gerhard and Bernd Mlady) lined up against each other in the match for third place. The 2010 UCI World Champions RV Gärtringen, who were also UCI World Cup winners in 2008 and 2010, took a convincing 9:4 win.
In the ranking matches, Austrian Champions RC Höchst II (Florian Fischer and Simon König) demonstrated their technical skills to beat Germans RVS Obernfeld (André and Manuel Kopp) 1:0 and take fifth place overall.
Hosts RMV Mosnang (Lukas Schönenberger- Timo Reichen) finished in 7th place thanks to a 6:3 win over former UCI World Champions TJ Favorit Brünn (Pavel Smid and Petr Skotak), from the Czech Republic. Meanwhile Czech Champions SC Svitavka (Jiri Hrdlicka and Pavel Loskot) took 9th place with an 8:3 win over Asian Champions RSV Osaka (Yosuke Murakami and Koji Okajima) from Japan.
