Daniel Martinez (EF Pro Cycling) turned the Critérium du Dauphiné upside down with a spectacular move up the Côte de Domancy on the way to Megève, at the end of the final day of the UCI WorldTour stage race dominated by the American climber Sepp Kuss (Jumbo-Visma). The young Colombian rider - who was a trainee at the UCI World Cycling Centre in Aigle (Switzerland) as a Junior in 2014 - took the overall win with an advantage of 29'' over Thibaut Pinot (Groupama-FDJ) and 41'' on another Frenchman, Guillaume Martin (Cofidis). His consistent performances all along the week and the small differences ahead of the last stage allowed Martinez to shake up the race on the last stage.
“We knew the race would be crazy today,” he said at the finish. “My team worked for me in the first part and I was able to save strength for the finale and go for the win. I was at the limit but I was determined to make it to the finish. It’s one of the biggest races in the world and to be able to win this, coming from Colombia, makes me very happy.”
