The first day of road race competition took place on Saturday at the 2018 UCI Para-cycling Road World Championships in Maniago, Italy. Rainbow jerseys were awarded in the Tricycle and Handcycle divisions, with a total of 14 World Championship titles decided.
The Netherlands were the top country, winning six medals, including four gold. Italy and the United States each won three gold medals, with one gold medal going to Australia, Belgium, Canada and Germany. After three days of competition, the Netherlands and Italy both have 13 medals, however, the Netherlands has nine gold to Italy's eight. The United States since just behind with 12 medals, including seven gold.
Seven athletes successfully defended their road race titles from 2017, while ten athletes won both the time trial and road race in their category.
Shelley Gautier of Canada took her 14th consecutive world title in the women's T1 category, and has now won every time trial and road race world title since her category was established in 2010.
Another athlete of note is Jetze Plat of the Netherlands in men's H4, who repeated as both the time trial and road race champion, after sweeping both events at the two World Cup events so far this season.
The UCI Para-cycling Road World Championships conclude on Sunday with the road race competitions for the Cycle and Tandem divisions, plus the Team Relay.
