The UCI Mountain Bike World Cup Chronicle

Both the women's and men's leaders of the downhill competitions increased their advantages in the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup presented by Shimano on Sunday, by winning the fourth round in Leogang, Austria. Rachel Atherton (Trek Factory Racing DH) won the 30th UCI World Cup event of her career and equally significantly, her tenth in a row, setting a new record for consecutive wins that was previously held by the legendary Anne-Caroline Chausson of France. Atherton beat Tahnee Seagrave (Transition Factory Racing/FMD) by over five seconds, with Canada's Miranda Miller finishing third. Atherton now holds a 300 point lead over Manon Carpenter (Madison Saracen), with Tracey Hannah (Polygon UR) a further 30 points back.

In the men's competition, UCI World Cup leader Aaron Gwin was the final starter after qualifying fastest. Gwin took the 16th World Cup win of his career. He was the only rider to go under three and a half minutes, finishing 3.131 seconds faster than Loris Vergier (Specialized Gravity p/b SRAM), who had the best result of his career. Troy Brosnan (Specialized Racing) took third, a further second back. In the overall standings, Gwin padded out his lead, and now has 810 points, 160 ahead of Brosnan, with Danny Hart (MS Mondraker) in third at 518 points.

Gaëtan Vigé (Commencal/Vallnord) won the Junior Men's competition, 0.625 seconds ahead of World Cup leader Finnley Iles (Specialized Gravity p/b SRAM). Iles continues to lead the standings with 160 points, followed by Vige at 135.

… Lenzerheide UCI Mountain Bike World Cup

This mountain resort, near Davos and Chur, is in the east of Switzerland. This is the second season for Lenzerheide on the UCI World Cup circuit, with a third round scheduled in 2017 followed by the UCI Mountain Bike World Championships in 2018.

Much of the 4.4 kilometre XCO circuit is in the forest, starting with the biggest climb, (up to 1552 metres altitude), followed by an immediate descent and a series of short, sharp climbs and descents for the rest of the course.

The 2.5km downhill track in the Lenzerheide Bikepark, is short, steep and very fast, and includes multiple rock gardens, root sections and jumps.

Nino Schurter (30) is a four time UCI World Champion and UCI World Cup Champion (including the current titleholder for both), and has claimed Olympic silver and bronze medals. He and French rival Julien Absalon have an almost absolute lock on the top two steps of the podium in every race they enter. Swiss fans can even get a Nino Schurter Visa credit card.
