The UCI Mountain Bike World Cup Chronicle

Lenzerheide (Switzerland) brought together both the downhill (DHI) and cross-country Olympic (XCO) athletes for Rounds 5 and 4, respectively.

It was an 11th straight UCI World Cup victory for Rachel Atherton (Trek Factory) in the Women's downhill. She finished a slim 0.707 seconds ahead of Tahnee Seagrave (Transition Factory/FMD), with Myriam Nicole (Commencal/Vallnord), in her first race back after an early season injury, taking third. Overall: 1 Atherton, 1220 points; 2 Manon Carpenter (Madison Saracen) 825; 3 Seagrave (765).

In the Men's downhill, Danny Hart (MS Mondraker) claimed the first UCI World Cup victory of his career, beating series leader Aaron Gwin (The YT Mob) by an infinitesimal 0.096 seconds. Defending Lenzerheide winner Greg Minnaar (Santa Cruz Syndicate) took third. Overall: 1 Gwin, 976 points; 2 Hart, 768; 3 Troy Brosnan (Specialized Racing) 765.

Sunday was devoted to XCO competition, with recently crowned UCI World Champions taking victories. Jenny Rissveds (Scott-Odlo), the Under-23 UCI World Champion, won the first UCI World Cup of her career, beating Elite UCI World Champion Annika Langvad (Specialized Racing), with local favourite Jolanda Neff (Stockli Pro) finishing third. Overall: 1 Langvad,776 points; 2 Catharine Pendrel (Luna) 620; 3 Rissveds 550.

In the Elite men's competition, Nino Schurter (Scott-Odlo), the new UCI World Champion, took a popular local win ahead of Julien Absalon (BMC), with Maxime Marotte (BH-SR Suntour-KMC) finishing third. Overall: 1 Schurter 900 points; 2 Absalon 810; 3 Marotte 720.

UCI Head of Off-Road Peter van den Abeele, raced mountain bike for Belgium at the 1996 and 2000 Olympics. UCI Technical Delegate Beat Wabel (SUI), raced the first Olympic Games for MTB, in 1996. Deputy MTB Coordinator Simon Burney (GBR), has attended every MTB UCI World Championships since 1990, providing tremendous institutional knowledge as the sport continues to evolve. And finally, Bart Brentjens (NED), the first men's Olympic Champion in MTB at the 1996 Atlanta Games, now works with the UCI Mountain Bike Commission as the UCI Elite MTB Team Representative.

Catharine Pendrel (35) is Canada's top-ranked XCO woman, and is always a favourite for the podium. Coached by her husband Keith Wilson, Pendrel is a two-time UCI World Champion and two-time overall UCI World Cup Champion, with 11 World Cup wins and 26 World Cup podiums. Rio will be her third Olympic Games.
