The 2016 UCI Trials World Cup concluded in Antwerp, Belgium, on September 24-25. This is the seventh consecutive year that the UCI Trials World Cup has visited Antwerp. The competition took place in the middle of the city, in the Grote Markt (Great Market Square), in the heart of the old city quarter, providing a stunning backdrop for the event.
In the Elite Women's competition, recently crowned UCI World Champion Nina Reichenbach of Germany was beaten for the first time this season, finishing second to Janine Jungfels of Australia. Perrine Devahive of Belgium took third. Reichenbach finishes the season with 1120 points to win the UCI World Cup title, followed by Tatiana Janickova of Slovakia (820 points) and Debi Studer of Switzerland (780 points).
The final round saw a change at the top of the Men's 20" ranking. With his third consecutive win (seven points), Abel Mustieles of Spain overtook his countryman Benito Ros to take the overall UCI World Cup title. Second in Antwerp with 19 points, Ros moved down to second in the overall standings with 1000 points to Mustieles’ 1050. Dominik Oswald of Germany finished third (21 points) in Antwerp and moved up from fourth to third in the overall standings with 760 points.
UCI World Champion Jack Carthy of Great Britain took his fourth consecutive win in the Men's 26", to lock up the World Cup title. Gilles Coustellier of France finished second to Carthy in Antwerp, followed by two other French riders Vincent Hermance and Nicolas Vallee. In the overall standings, Carthy finished with 1095 points, followed by Vallee at 835 and Hermance at 825.
With five rounds, the 2016 UCI Trials World Cup included the most rounds since 2014. The World Cup visited four countries in 2016, opening in Krakow, Poland for the third consecutive year, and finishing in Antwerp for the third time.
Australian Janine Jungfels is a rare non-European rider to win on the UCI World Cup circuit. The 27year o-ld from Brisbane has been competing since 2005 and racing internationally since 2009, when she finished fourth at the UCI World Championships held on home soil in Canberra. She won the world title in 2015 and has16 World Cup podiums, including six wins, to her name.
