The UCI Women's WorldTour Chronicle

U.S. National Road Champion Megan Guarnier (Boels Dolmans Cycling Team) won round nine of the 2016 UCI Women’s WorldTour on Sunday to extend her lead in the UCI Women’s WorldTour series. With her win at the Philadelphia International Cycling Classic coming two weekends after her overall victory at the Amgen Tour of California, Guarnier has won the two rounds of UCI Women’s WorldTour racing that North America will host. It is Guarnier’s sixth win of the season, and is the seventh UCI Women’s WorldTour win for Guarnier’s Dutch-registered squad.

With the win in Philadelphia, Guarnier solidifies her lead in the UCI Women’s WorldTour with 624 points, 226 points more than Emma Johansson (Wiggle High5) in second overall. Guarnier’s teammate, UCI World Champion Lizzie Armitstead, remains in third overall with 368 points. Neither Johansson nor Armitstead raced in Philadelphia, but both are expected to race the Aviva Women’s Tour in Great Britain, round ten of the UCI Women’s WorldTour, which Guarnier will miss.

There is no change to the UCI Women’s WorldTour youth ranking, which Kasia Niewiadoma (Rabo Liv Women Cycling Team) continues to lead.

After nine rounds of racing, the UCI Women’s WorldTour has covered 1471.1 kilometres.

Before a race, certain high-profile riders are called to the start line by name.

These pre-race call-ups serve several purposes:

While there are no set rules about who receives a call up at a UCI Women’s WorldTour race, they typically include the UCI Women’s WorldTour leader, past winners, the UCI World Champion, national champions, pre-race favourites and riders racing on home soil.

Once the call-ups are completed, the remainder of the field is given the green light to roll up to the line.

American Mara Abbott (30) won both the sprint jersey and the climber’s jersey at the Philadelphia International Cycling Classic on Sunday.

Professional since 2007, Abbott is currently part of the UCI Women’s Team Wiggle High5. The two-time Giro d’Italia Internazionale Femminile winner hopes her climbing prowess will earn her one of Team USA’s four spots for the Rio 2016 Olympics.
