UCI Women’s WorldTour leader Megan Guarnier (Boels-Dolmans Cycling Team) won the Giro d’Italia Internazionale Femminile (Giro Rosa) on Sunday to become the second American rider to take home the maglia rosa. The 31-year-old finished 34 seconds ahead of teammate Evie Stevens and 1:53 ahead of Anna van der Breggen (Rabobank Liv Women Cycling Team).
Interestingly, Guarnier topped the general classification without winning a single stage. Stevens was the Giro Rosa’s most prolific winner, climbing to victory on two mountain stages and winning the individual time trial.
Giorgia Bronzini (Wiggle High5) won two sprint stages while her teammates Chloe Hosking and Mara Abbott, a two-time Giro Rosa winner (2010, 2013), won one stage apiece. Additional stage winners included first-time UCI Women’s WorldTour winners Leah Kirchmann (Team Liv Plantur), Tiffany Cromwell (Canyon SRAM Racing) and Thalita de Jong (Rabo Liv Women’s Cycling Team).
The UCI Women’s WorldTour leader’s jersey remains firmly in Guarnier’s grasp. She leads teammates Lizzie Armistead by 341 points. Kasia Niewiadoma (Rabobank Liv Women Cycling Team), who won the Giro Rosa young rider’s jersey, remains in the UCI Women’s WorldTour blue youth jersey.
After eleven rounds and 29 days of racing, the UCI Women’s WorldTour has covered 2948.9 kilometres.

The individual time trial – also known as the race against the clock – is a non-mass start race that can be held as part of a stage race or as a standalone event.
Riders typically race on aerodynamic equipment – bikes, wheels, helmets and clothing – specifically developed to reduce wind resistance and increase speed.
In most cases, riders will set off at one- or two-minute intervals with several riders out on the road at the same time, but all riders having started at a different time. Drafting is not allowed in a time trial, and if a rider catches her “minute man” (the rider that started ahead of her), she must pass as quickly as possible.
UCI Cyclo-cross World Champion Thalita de Jong snagged victory at the ninth and final stage of the 2016 Giro Rosa. The 22-year-old, who races road and cyclo-cross, turned professional with Rabo-Liv Cycling Team in 2012. Her younger sister Demi rides for rival Dutch squad Boels-Dolmans Cycling Team.
