The UCI Women's WorldTour Chronicle

Three UCI women’s races ran concurrently last week: Tour de Bretagne Féminin in France, BeNe Ladies Tour in Belgium and the Netherlands, and Internationale Thüringen Rundfahrt der Frauen in Germany.

Cuban Arlenis Sierra won two stages and the overall at the five-day Tour de Bretagne, bagging the first European wins of her young career. Lara Vieceli (Inpa - Bianchi) won the opening prologue and Silvia Valsecchi (BePink) won the individual time trial. Ilaria Sanguineti (BePink) won the remaining road stage.

Belgian Jolien d’Hoore (Wiggle High5) dominated BeNe Ladies Tour. The 26-year-old won three of the four stages - two road stages and the individual time trial – en route to her second straight overall victory. Nina Kessler (Lensworld – Zannata) won the only stage that didn’t go to d’Hoore.

The Internationale Thüringen Rundfahrt der Frauen remains underway in Germany. With three stages down and five stages still to race, Olga Zabelinskaya (Russia) wears the race leader’s jersey due to her solo stage win on Saturday. Marianne Vos (Rabo Liv Women Cycling Team) won stages one and three and currently sits second overall, three seconds behind Zabelinskaya.

Round 12 of the UCI Women’s WorldTour, a circuit race on the Champs – Élysées, is run ahead of the men’s peloton arrival in Paris for the final stage of the Tour de France.

While not the longest, hardest or even the most prestigious race on the women’s calendar, it’s an incredibly important one due to the spotlight it offers. The 89km, 13-lap race benefits from the infrastructure already in place for the Tour and presents an unprecedented opportunity for the professional women’s peloton to attract new fans, sponsors and media attention.

RaboLiv Women Cycling Team riders won the first two editions of La Course with Marianne Vos in 2014 and Anna van der Breggen in 2015.

Alice Barnes (Drops Cycling) turned 21 during the Thüringen Rundfahrt, where she pulled on the young rider’s jersey on stage three. The Briton is racing her first full road season following years of racing mountain bikes. Part of the British Cycling Academy, Barnes hope to secure a professional road contract with one of the UCI Women’s WorldTour’s top teams. Her older sister Hannah races for CANYON//SRAM Racing.
