Nine rainbow jerseys were awarded on Thursday, the opening day of competition at the 2018 UCI Para-cycling Road World Championships in Maniago, Italy. The host country and the Netherlands led the medal standings, with four gold medals each. Australia was the only other nation to win a gold medal. Five defending champions successfully kept their titles - Emilie Miller (Australia) in women's H1, Carmen Koedood (Netherlands) in women's H2, Francesca Porcellato (Italy) in women's H3, Luca Mazzone (Italy) in men's H2 and Jetz Plat (Netherlands) in men's H4.
New champions took the other four titles. Jennette Jansen of the Netherlands won the women's H4, and Laura de Vaan of the Netherlands was the women's H5 winner. Italy's Fabrizio Cornegliani won the men's H1, with Federico Mestroni of Italy defeating fellow countryman and defending UCI World Champion Paolo Cecchetto in men's H3. Time trial competition continues on Friday for women and men's tandems, cycling (C1 - C5) and tricycle (T1 - T2) divisions.
