After Liège-Bastogne-Liège in April, Jakob Fuglsang (Astana Pro Team) has won his first UCI WorldTour stage race of the year, the Critérium du Dauphiné. It was his second win in the French stage race after 2017, but this time the Danish rider rode the final stage - to Champery, over the French-Swiss border – already in the leader’s jersey. Protected by his “blue limousine” Astana team, he was never in danger on the last mountain stage which saw second-placed Adam Yates (Mitchelton Scott) pull out due to illness. Marked by the abandon due to serious injury of Chris Froome (Team Ineos), the 2019 Critérium du Dauphiné will also be remembered as the event that revealed Wout van Aert’s incredible stage racing capacity. The triple cyclo-cross UCI World Champion took a surprise win in the stage 4 time trial, which the Team Jumbo Visma rider followed up the next day by taking victory from a bunch sprint. Van Aert finished the week of racing with the points jersey.

Lizzie Deignan (Trek Segafredo) celebrated a home win, finishing the six stages of the OVO Energy Women’s Tour with a two-second advantage over Poland’s Katarzyna Niewiadoma (Canyon-SRAM Racing). It was a close-fought race, with the leader of the General Classification changing every day on the first five days. After stage four - at 158.9km the longest in the history of the event - Niewiadoma and Germany’s Liane Lippert (Team Sunweb) were both sitting on the same time, with Lippert taking the leader’s jersey on countback. However, Deignan won stage five in a sprint over Niewiadoma and went into the sixth and final stage in the overall lead, a mere one second ahead of the Polish rider. She doubled her advantage by winning a bonus second in an intermediate sprint on the tense final stage, to take the overall win in front of Niewiadoma and sixth-stage winner Amy Pieters (Boels Dolmans CyclingTeam).

It was two in a row for Frenchman Hugo Briatta (Men Elite) and Italy’s Gaia Tormena (Women Elite) who both claimed victory in Tuscany just two weeks after their wins in Villard-de-Lans (France). Already in the UCI World Cup leader’s jersey after Villard-de-Lans, Briatta and round one winner Jeroen van Eck (NED) raced a two-man battle up front in the Volterra final. The French athlete confirms his lead after three of the seven UCI World Cup rounds, while van Eck moves up to second in the overall standings. In the Women Elite competition, 17-year-old Tormena proved her victory in France was no stroke of luck. The teenager moves into the lead of the standings after soloing to her second win ahead of European Champion Irina Popova (UKR).
