France and Switzerland dominated the opening round of the UCI E-Mountain Bike Cross-country World Cup in Monaco with athletes from the two nations occupying all the podium spots. Victory in the Men’s race went to Frenchman Jérôme Gilloux, already victorious on the same course last year, and silver medallist at the 2019 UCI World Championships. Meanwhile reigning Women’s UCI World Champion Nathalie Schneitter (SUI) finished 12 seconds ahead of fellow Swiss Alba Wunderlin.
Already part of the World E-Bike Series last year, the challenging course saw the riders tackle a 700m ascent from the start line before completing 6 laps of an undulating 2.3km course.
Round two of the UCI E-Mountain Bike Cross-country World Cup is scheduled for 17-19 April in Ascona-Locarno, Switzerland.

Maximilian Schachmann (Bora-Hansgrohe) overcame conditions worthy of a Belgian Classic to win the opening stage of Paris-Nice. Facing rain, crosswinds and cobbles, the peloton had their work cut out for them in a 154km stage starting and finishing in Plaisir (Pleasure). After a series of splits, the decisive move came around 65km from the finish, crosswinds forcing the formation of several echelons. On the final cobbled climb, Schachmann and Dylan Teuns (Bahrain-McLaren) bridged across to the leading duo of Tiesj Benoot (Team Sunweb) and Julian Alaphilippe (Deceuninck-Quick-Step). The four riders in contention for the stage win hauled in each other’s attacks, and it was finally the German Champion Schachmann who had the winning power. He was followed by Teuns, Benoot and a fading Alaphilippe, who nonetheless had picked up precious bonus seconds along the way.
Stage two on Monday is raced on a flat 166km course between Chevreuse and Chalette-sur-Loing.
