WHAT HAPPENED
Eli Iserbyt’s winning World Cup streak came to an end in Tabór with the return of UCI World Champion Mathieu Van der Poel (NED) to the circuit. After winning the first three rounds of the 2019-2020 season the young Belgian had to bow down to the experience and superiority of Van der Poel, who quickly made his way to the front after starting the race in the third row. The final tour came down to a two-man battle and it was Van der Poel – like in the European Championships a week earlier – who came through for an emotional victory just days after the death of his grandfather Raymond Poulidor.
The Elite Women’s race was a Dutch affair, with athletes from the Netherlands claiming the top four positions. After losing her European Champion’s jersey, Annemarie Worst was back to her winning ways, claiming a second consecutive UCI World Cup victory. Ceylin Carmen del Alvarado took an early lead but was soon joined by Worst. The two rode up front and battled for victory in the final lap, with Worst getting the better of her compatriot, to win by 10 seconds. Newly-crowned European Champion Yara Kastelijn finished a further 10s back, followed by Lucinda Brand.
