Weekly recap | 05 - 11 August

08-11 August | Baie-Comeau (CAN)

American Oksana Masters made waves in the last round of the UCI Para-cycling Road World Cup with her wins in the Women’s H5 time trial and road race. Making her return to para-cycling after the Rio 2016 Paralympics (where she finished 5th and 4th respectively in the two cycling disciplines), the 30-year-old athlete demonstrated that she will be hard to beat in Tokyo 2020. Masters already has Paralympic medals in rowing (London 2012), cross-country skiing (Sotchi 2014) and biathlon (Pyeongchang 2018). China headed the medals tables in Baie-Comeau with seven gold, two silver and four bronze, followed by the Netherlands and Italy.

09-11 August | Wadowice (Poland)

Sixteen countries were represented in the 2019 UCI Trials World Youth Games for riders aged 9-16, which is traditionally a springboard onto the international Elite trials scene. The opening Youth National Teams competition (between teams comprising riders from both genders and all categories) once again saw Spain take the honours with 650 points in front of Japan with 520 points. That result set the tone for the weekend with these two nations sharing out the gold medals between them: four for Spain (Poussins, Youth Girls, Girls and Benjamins) and two for Japan (Minimes and Cadets).

The first two steps of the Women Elite downhill podium were occupied by the same athletes as one week ago in Val di Sole (Italy): Marine Caribou (FRA) got the better of Australian Tracey Hannah to take her second consecutive victory. France had two men on the Men Elite downhill podium with Amaury Pierron (1st) and Loïc Bruni (3rd). Sandwiched between them was triple UCI World Champion (2002, 2012, 2013) Greg Minnaar. The 37-year-old South African was also second in Leogang (Austria) in June.

The Netherlands’ Mathieu van der Poel continues his winning streak, taking both the cross-country short track (XCC) and cross-country Olympic (XCO) wins in Lenzerheide, as he did in Val di Sole the previous weekend. Switzerland’s Nino Schurter and Mathias Flückiger finished 2nd and 3rd in the XCO, reversing their places from Val di Sole. In the Elite Women’s racing, Pauline Ferrand-Prévot won the XCC, but was unable to repeat her XCO win from Val di Sole, finishing 3rd behind Sweden’s Jenny Rissveds and Dutch rider Anne Terpstra.
