October 17th-22nd |China
Just two more stages of the Gree - Tour of Guangxi, and the 2019 UCI WorldTour draws to a close. So far, the final Chinese stage race has seen stage victories go to Fernando Gaviria Rendon (UAE Team Emirates), Daniel McLay (EF Education First), Pascal Ackermann (Bora hansgrohe) and Enric Mas Nicolau (Deceuninck – Quick-Step), who claimed the win in Sunday’s Queen stage at Nongla. Also of note from the first four stages are the three – frustrating – third places on the first three days for Mitchelton Scott’s Matteo Trentin (ITA), and second place in the Queen stage for former UCI World Cycling Centre trainee Daniel Martinez (COL), who now rides for EF Education First. Mas wears the leader’s jersey with two stages to go and will be looking to succeed Italian Gianni Moscon who took the overall win in 2018 wearing the colours of Team Sky.
October 20th |Bern, Switzerland
The Elite winners of the third round of the Telenet UCI Cyclo-cross World Cup soloed to their victories in the Swiss capital by more than 30 seconds.
Competing in her first UCI World Cup round of the season, European Champion Annemarie Worst (NED) took a clear win ahead of fellow Dutch athlete Ceylin Del Carmen Alvarado (2nd) and young British rider Anna Kay, who celebrated her first UCI World Cup Elite podium. In 7th place, the Czech Republic’s Katerina Nash extended her lead in the overall UCI World Cup standings after taking first and second in the first two rounds of the season.
Belgium’s Eli Iserbyt made it three out of three after his two victories on American soil in Iowa City and Waterloo. The Men Elite podium in Bern was an exact replica of that in Waterloo, with Iserbyt joined by Belgian Champion Toon Aerts (2nd for the third time) and Michael Vanthourenhout, Iserbyt’s Pauwels Sauzen-Bingoal team-mate.
October 18th-19th|Köniz, Switzerland
Americans reigned supreme at the Redbull UCI Pump Track World Championships, with Payton Ridenour fastest in the Women’s final and Tommy Zula claiming victory in the Men’s competition.
Up against Swiss local Nadine Aeberhard in the final, Ridenour put in a blistering final circuit to win the rainbow jersey. Another Swiss athlete, 2018 World Champion Christa von Niederhäusern, went fastest in the small final to claim bronze. The Swiss hosts also had to make do with silver in the Men’s final, with Tommy Zula beating local teenager Tristan Borel. Third place went to Frenchman Eddy Clerté, who got the better of Niels Bensink (NED) in the run-off for bronze.
After the first Pump Track World Championships held in Arkansas (USA) in 2018, this year’s Worlds saw this major event come under the UCI umbrella. Some 100 athletes competed in Bern, after earning a starting slot at one of the 25 qualifying events held around the world throughout the year. The last qualifiers earned their slots in Bern the day before the 2019 Redbull UCI Pump Track World Championships!
