The young generation showed what’s what in Spain with the reigning Junior UCI World Champion Remco Evenepoel (Deceuninck – Quick-Step) and Under-23 UCI World Champion Marc Hirschi (Team Sunweb) claiming first and third respectively. Evenepoel soloed to the first UCI WorldTour one-day win of his career after attacking on the final climb, while 20-year-old Hirschi signed his best UCI WorldTour result of his career in the sprint for the remaining podium places. Sandwiched between 19-year-old Evenepoel and 20-year-old Hirschi on the podium was reigning Olympic Champion Greg Van Avermaet (CCC Team), at 34 years old some 15 years older than his podium companions.

Dutch Champion Lorena Wiebes (Parkhotel Valkenburg) again demonstrated her sprinting qualities, adding her first UCI Women’s WorldTour one-day victory to a string of 2019 successes, not least all three stages of the Tour of Chongming Island in May. In London on Saturday, the 20-year-old’s teammates set her up for the final sprint, and she took the lead 200 metres from the finish line. Fellow Dutchwoman Kirsten Wild (WNT Rotor Pro Cycling Team) managed to edge past her at the finish, but was then relegated for deviating from her line, leaving Wiebes to celebrate victory. Second and third places went to Italian Elisa Balsamo (Valcar Cylance Cycling), and 2017 winner American Coryn Rivera, (Team Sunweb). Other race favourites were caught up in a mass crash just metres from the finish.

It was a ‘double victory weekend’ for Deceuninck – Quick-Step: the day after Remco Evenepoel’s victory in the Basque Country, Elia Viviani sprinted to victory after a 169km race in and around London. Bora Hansgrohe’s Sam Bennett came in for second after losing team mates in a crash not far from the finish. Deceuninck – Quick-Step had two riders on the podium thanks to third-placed Michael Mørkøv.
