What’s happening
Pascal Ackermann (Bora-Hansgrohe) starts stage two of the UAE Tour in the leader’s red jersey after taking victory against a strong field of top sprinters on Sunday.
Riders had to cope with head winds and cross winds for much of the flat 148km opening stage, but after a left turn with 14km remaining, the peloton had a tailwind, picked up speed and reeled in the remains of an earlier breakaway as the sprint teams began jostling for position. Germany’s Ackerman made his winning move early – 300 metres from the finish - and held off the rest of the bunch to the line. Caleb Ewan (Lotto Soudal) took second and Frenchman Rudy Barbier (Israel Start-Up Nation) third.
Meanwhile, eight months after a serious crash during recon ride at the Critérium du Dauphiné, Chris Froome (Team Ineos) was back in the UCI WorldTour peloton, delighted to finish in the bunch on stage one.
