1 February | Australia
What happened
The 2020 UCI Women’s WorldTour opened in Australia with a first-ever victory at that level for the 2018 German Champion Liane Lippert (Team Sunweb). Heavy rain and strong winds were no deterrent for the gutsy 22-year-old who placed an attack on the finishing circuit in Geelong, relegating last year’s winner, Cuba’s Arlenis Sierra (Astana Women's Team), to second place. Sierra, a former UCI World Cycling Centre trainee, won the sprint for second, with Australian Champion Amanda Spratt (Mitchelton Scott) finishing third.

What happened
Belgium’s Dries Devenyns (Deceuninck – Quick-Step) won a two-man sprint against Russian Pavel Sivakov (Team Ineos) to claim victory at the end of the 171km road race. It was a day of aggressive riding, that saw riders gradually being weeded out of the front group. When Sivakov attacked with 5km to go, only Devenyns, at that stage devoid of any teammates, put in a chase and caught him up. The two men remained in front, and it was Devenyns who launched the sprint a few hundred metres from the end, managing to hold off his breakaway partner until the end. Mitchelton Scott’s Daryl Impey won the sprint for third place a further four seconds back.

What happened
The Americans shone on Australian soil, taking three of the four wins in Rounds 1 and 2 of the 2020 UCI BMX Supercross World Cup. UCI World Champion Alise Willoughby made a clean sweep in the Elite Women’s racing, winning on both Saturday and Sunday, while her fellow American Connor Fields claimed Elite Men’s victory on Day 2. Only the Netherlands’ Niek Kimmann could break the US domination, winning Round 1 of the Elite Men’s competition. Australia began their “home” event strongly, claiming second place in Saturday’s Elite Women’s final thanks to Saya Sakakibara and second (Anthony Dean) and third (Izaac Kennedy) in the Elite Men’s final. However the two second-placed athletes had to make do with fourth place the following day.
