21-26 January | Australia
What happened
The 2020 UCI WorldTour is underway, with the first victory of the season going to Richie Porte (Trek-Segafredo). Overall winner in 2017 and second the two following years, the Australian won stage three and spent two days in the leader’s jersey before losing it to 2018 and 2019 winner Daryl Impey (Mitchelton Scott) on the penultimate stage five. But Porte was too strong on the last day’s infamous Willunga Hill, where he attacked on the second ascension. Only eventual stage winner Matt Holmes (Lotto Soudal) managed to stay with him.
Meanwhile, Australian Caleb Ewan (Lotto Soudal) demonstrated he is the sprinter of the moment: although Irishman Sam Bennett (Deceuninck – Quick-Step) won the first stage sprint, Ewan then found his sprinting legs and raced to victory in stages two and four.
