What happened

Finishing in Valdeblore La Colmiane after seven stages instead of eight – the final stage cancelled due to the coronavirus epidemic – Paris-Nice saw victory go to German Maximilian Schachmann. In the leader’s jersey since winning the first stage in Plaisir, the Bora-Hansgrohe rider managed to stay with a chase group on the last day Saturday to preserve his lead over Belgian Tiesj Benoot (Team Sunweb).  Winner of stage six, Benoot started stage seven 36 seconds down on Schachmann. He managed to halve that difference on the last day, finishing second behind an impressive Nairo Quintana (Team Arkea-Samsic) who had attacked from a small breakaway group with 3.6km to go.

While Colombia celebrated Quintana’s stage victory, the country’s latest talent Sergio Higuita (EF Pro Cycling) continues an impressive early season. After his national title – where he finished 1:15 ahead of 2019 Tour de France winner Egan Bernal – and victory in Tour Colombia 2.1, the 22-year-old came away from Paris Nice with third place overall and the young rider’s white jersey.
