Just off the podium at the 2019 Presidential Cycling Tour of Turkey, the fourth place of Belgium’s Remco Evenepoel (Deceuninck-Quick-Step) did not go unnoticed. At just 19 years old and four months into his career as a professional cyclist, the Junior UCI Champion in the time trial and road race finished the six-day stage race just 53 seconds off overall winner Felix Großschartner (AUT), of Bora-hansgrohe. In a nail-biting finish of the Amstel Gold Race Ladies Edition, Annemiek van Vleuten (Mitchelton Scott) used all her time trial skills to try to pull in winner Katarzyna Niewiadoma (Canyon / SRAM Racing). To no avail. After attacking on the final ascent of the Cauberg, Niewiadoma (POL) just managed to hold off a punishing chase from the double time trial UCI World Champion, who took 2nd place.
Boels-Dolmans CyclingTeam made their mark on the race, riding in pink kit and on pink bikes in support of Pink Ribbon and breast cancer research. The UCI granted UCI World Champion Anna van der Breggen special permission to ride in a pink rainbow jersey for the race. Money raised from the on-line auction of their pink gear goes to the charity.
Like father like son. Mathieu van der Poel’s victory at the Amstel Gold Race on Sunday came 29 years after that of his father Adrie, in similar circumstances. Both men played catch-up in the finale to overtake the two breakaway riders and claim the win. Adrie van der Poel’s win in 1990 was the last Classics victory of his career, while for Dutch national champion Mathieu, at just 24 years old, there is certainly more to come… be it on the road, in cyclo-cross and/or in mountain bike. Second behind the Corendon - Circus rider was Australia’s Simon Clarke (EF Education First) with the two breakaway riders Jakob Fuglsang (Astana) and Julian Alaphilippe (Deceuninck-QuickStep) finishing third and fourth respectively.

The first round of the UCI BMX Freestyle World Cup in Hiroshima saw several Japanese athletes shine in front of their home crowd. Misaka Katagiri and Aya Nagaishi finished first and third in the women’s Flatland, while Ryo Katagiri dominated the men’s Flatland competition. Meanwhile Rimu Nakamura, at just 17 years old, finished second in the men’s Freestyle Park between Australians Brandon Loupos and Logan Martin. The women’s Freestyle Park competition was the only one that didn’t have a Japanese athlete on the podium, but it was close: Oike Minato finished a credible fourth.
