Decision on provisional measures by the Belgian Competition Authority concerning the suspension of the “Maximum Gear Test Protocol”

Following the press release dated 9 October 2025, the UCI clarifies that, in accordance with a decision issued by the Belgian Competition Authority, the “Maximum Gear Test Protocol” adopted in June 2025 is not applicable. Consequently, there is currently no rule limiting the maximum gear ratios.

As a reminder, the purpose of the aforementioned Test Protocol was to allow the limitation of maximum gear ratios in selected events for testing purposes. As this ad hoc regulation has now been suspended, no limitations on gear ratios apply to events on the UCI International Calendar.

The decision of the Belgian Competition Authority is available via this link.

For the sake of clarity, the UCI issues a reminder that the Test Protocol only applied to races on the UCI International Calendar.
