The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) is pleased with today’s decision of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) to include cycling amongst the 23 sports selected for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games (25 August - 6 September 2020).
Cycling has been featuring constantly at the Paralympic Games for more than 30 years since Los Angeles 1984. Its success at London 2012, with 144 medals, shows the modernity and the weight of our sport at the Paralympic Games. By including cycling to the 2020 Games, the IPC has confirmed the Paralympic status for our sport.
Following IPC’s announcement, UCI President Brian Cookson said: “Thanks to cycling’s global reach and the UCI’s commitment in promoting our sport, cycling will feature again in 5 years time in Japan. Meanwhile, we will keep on raising the profile of our discipline through our leading events, the UCI Para-cycling World Championships and UCI Para-cycling World Cup. The UCI is committed to make a major contribution to the success of the 2020 Paralympic Games and beyond.”
