The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) is extremely sad to announce the loss of UCI Management Committee member Peder Pedersen (69), a man who had dedicated his entire life to the sport of cycling.
Mr Pedersen was the pride of Danish track cycling, winning multiple national titles and many medals at the UCI Track World Championships including a gold (sprint in 1974), two silver and one bronze. Peder also had the honour of representing Denmark at the 1964, 1968 and 1972 Olympic Games, before putting his experience to the benefit of Danish talents as national coach for 15 years (1977-1992).
In 1991, he was elected as President of the Danish Cycling Federation, a role which he held for fourteen years. Peder joined the UCI Amateur Board in 1993 and was elected as a member of the UCI Management Committee in 2005. He was a strong advocate for clean cycling and made a great contribution as President of the UCI's Anti-Doping Commission (2013-2015) and Track Commission (2013-2015), playing an important role in the revitalisation of the UCI Hour Record in the latter position.
UCI President Brian Cookson said: "It is with great sorrow that we have to say goodbye to our colleague and friend Peder. He was not only a successful track cyclist, but also became one of the best administrators of cycling and a great advocate for a clean sport. The thoughts of the entire cycling family are with his wife Hanne, his two children and all of his family and friends".
