UCI Hour Record timed by Tissot: postponement of Alex Dowsett’s attempt

The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) announces that Alex Dowsett has been obliged to postpone his attempt to reconquer the UCI Hour Record timed by Tissot, initially scheduled for 12 December, after contracting Covid-19.

The date of the new attempt by the British rider has not yet been decided.

The record for the longest distance covered in one hour is currently held by Belgium’s Victor Campenaerts who set the mark of 55.089 km on 16 April 2019 in Aguascalientes (Mexico).

Alex Dowsett had already set the UCI Hour Record by covering the distance of 52.937 km on 2 May 2015 in Manchester (Great Britain), before another British athlete, Bradley Wiggins, set a new mark of 54.526 km 36 days later.

Alex Dowsett declared: “I am really disappointed the attempt can’t go ahead as planned but my health is first and foremost the priority. I’d like to thank everyone, the event organisers, event sponsors, my team, the UCI and above all the public for their support and very much look forward to attacking the record in 2021 with the same intent. We’re looking to announce a 2021 date as soon as possible.”
