UCI introduces new approval process for EPAC’s drive units

The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) has introduced a new approval process for the drive units of Electrically Power Assisted Cycles (EPACs). It is being implemented for the first time at the 2025 UCI Mountain Bike World Championships which will take place in Valais, Switzerland (1-14 September).

The EPAC’s Drive Unit Approval Process was approved by the UCI Management Committee during its meeting in Arzon, France, on 10-12 June. Following the 2025 UCI Mountain Bike World Championships, it will be applied to all UCI-sanctioned E-mountain bike events from 2026.

The approval process, which follows broad consultation with the bicycle manufacturing industry, safeguards integrity and ensures fair competition at all levels of racing while allowing scope for future developments of E-mountain bike.

It is important to note that it is the manufacturers' responsibility to submit drive units for approval.

Regulations concerning Electrically Power Assisted Cycles can be found in Article 1.3.010bis of the UCI Regulations.
