I can’t watch the live stream due to geo-blocking. Why is this?
This is because the UCI has a broadcast partnership with a TV channel or Streaming / OTT service website from your country. In Sports media, it is common practice that such broadcasters are exclusive partners meaning that they hold the transmission rights to the live stream.
Can I still watch the live stream somewhere else?
Yes – the UCI will only geo-block the event in your country if there is a broadcaster showing the event live or shortly after the event happens, e.g. showing an afternoon event later in the evening. So if you find the UCI event geo-blocked, please check the list of TV Broadcasters for the event, which will be published prior to the event. Please be aware, the broadcaster might operate a pay-per-view / subscription service.
Will I always be geo-blocked for the UCI live streams?
No – the list of geo-blocked countries can change depending on the event. The UCI will only geo-block the event if a National broadcaster or Streaming / OTT service is showing the event.
Why does the UCI still cooperate with traditional TV channels instead of only using Youtube to broadcast events?
The costs to run events combined with TV production are very high. For this reason, the UCI has to sell its media rights to broadcast partners who in exchange demand exclusivity for the country where they are broadcasting.
